I like to setup a 2nd digital source "Squeezebox". Plan to use a external DAC for $1200 or less new or used. Thanks for your suggestions!

My Musical Fidelity X-DAC v3 is pretty good. You probably find second hand TriVistas for that too - similar performance.

Benchmark DAC-1? What do they retail for over there? I'd guess less than $1,200?

Hah! I saw you were from Tampa, and was gonna invite you to a TBLS meeting, until I realized you just changed your Username! So, you're finally crossing over to the (Squeezebox) "dark side!"

As for DAC's, you've got LOTS of choices! Does your Esoteric player have digital inputs? If not, does somebody offer a Mod for that? Otherwise, a used Benchmark or Lavry can be had for under $750. If you'd like to borrow mine for a few days, let me know.

If you're looking for a Squeezebox and DAC, why not go with the Logitech Transporter? But if you do get a separate DAC, be sure to get one that converts 24/96 (or even better - 24/196) so you're ready as this resolution becomes more popular especially for music downloads. I think most are 24/96 capable these days.

I've been considering upgrading my CD/DAC combo to USB input just so that I'll have the flexibility to go direct from my laptop or other device in the near future. I've heard that USB DAC are supposed to be more resistant to jitter but I'm sure there is a lot of discussion yet to come about that.

Benchmark is definitely one of the brands I would look for in your price range.

The Transporter has digital inputs to serve as a DAC with volume control and remote.
