ML Sequel II- Will they work with my gear?

Hello-

I came across a pair of these beauties today, and the price is not too bad. I didn't pick them up yet, but I'm tempted. But I would like to know if my Curcio modded Dynaco MKIII's will make them sing. Is anyone driving their Sequels with 60 WPC tube amps? I listen to vinyl, and have a Joule Electra Pre Amp.

In addition, what problems should I be on the lookout for with these babies? They had the 2dB Bass boost switch. They seem to have a rubber based paint that is kind of sticky. Can they be repainted?

I initially had a high-current 60 Wpc SS amp on my Sequels and it was insufficient. I think you would be okay with a SS amp with the same gain on the woofers and your tubes on the panels. The gain on your amp will probably be rated in dB... most likely 26 or 29 dB. If you can find a matching SS amp it'll work great for the heavy lifting of bass and the tubes can be free to sing in the important stuff.

The Sequels are an awesome pair of speakers and I'll bet you'll love them.

I agree, the woofer section needs a bit of power. Bi-amping is a good option.

Right now I'm powering my original Sequels with a Citation II, which has the same rated power per channel as the Dyna Mk IIIs; the Citation has no trouble running them full range. However the Mk III IMO hasn't got the headroom of the Citation, but there's still plenty of power to play no matter what, depending on the size of your listening room. Definitely give them a try without bi-amping first. For quicker, deeper slam, bi-amping may be a consideration, depending on your taste for music.

FWIW -
When I began the never-ending ML quest, I heard the Sequel IIs at a dealer driven by a 60 wpc ARC Classic 60 tube amp. I thought the sound was wonderful. When I later purchased the same combination, I found the amp ran out of gas rather quickly. A switch to an ARC VT100 ameliorated the problem. The Curcio mod (I built a Curcio Dyna ST70) is a very good sounding amp, but I would expect a possibly limited dynamic range from that pairing.

Thanks to everyone for your input. They look mighty tempting, but they had low WAF, at least as far as my "W" is concerned. I might still go for it. They were only $450 for the pair. But I'd hate to get on the upgrade merry go round. I love my MKIII's, which I built myself. Can you sense my equivocation? Oh well, thanks again.
