I have a chance to pick one up at a good price a McIntosh C39 pre-amp. Currently I am using a Sunfire Theater Grand 2 as my pre-amp. I was thinking of going with a McIntosh C39. The only issue the C39 is a Dolby pro-logic pre amp. It cannot decode DTS or DD. I do a fair amount of movie watching. My question is this, can I use an external DTS / DD decoder and then run 6 channels direct in to the McIntosh C-39. Will this give me true DTS / DD surround sound? Will it improve my sound quality?

Thanks

Another option is to get a good two channel preamp for audio and run the left and right main outputs of your Sunfire through the two-channel preamp for video. The Sunfire feeds the signal to the amps for the center, surrounds and sub. The pre feeds amps for the main left and right channels. It easier with a preamp that has a set of inputs with a unity gain (i.e. pass through), but it is not required. You just have to remember where to set the volume on the pre when you watch movies to get the correct left and right channel balance.
