My receiver is 85w into 6 channels (Yamaha-to be upgraded quickly). If my R+L are 5 ohms, my center is 6 ohms, and my three surrounds are 8 ohms; am I OK ? As I prepare to buy a new receiver what do I look for in terms of impedance/resistance ? Just more power ? I have been looking at the Yamaha RXV-1800. A wise choice ? Denon AVR-2808 ?

Mark, assuming it's for your Montage set-up you should be fine, their sensitivity is 90db, remember the 5ohm figure is a nominal one.

On the subject of receivers (I too am gathering info for replacing one in a secondary system), my current favorite is the Integra DTR 7.8. It is well within the price range of the Yammie you mentioned, maybe even a couple of $$ cheaper. I believe it to be superior to both the Yammie and Denon in the area of dynamic headroom.

Impedance is (simplified) the opposition to a varying AC current whereas resistance is the opposition to a non-varying AC or DC current. Parallel impedance is given by the equation (1/X + 1/X + 1/X) ad infinitum /1.

In your instance the parallel impedance would be less than one ohm (1/5 + 1/5 + 1/6 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8)/1 but since each amp module drives its own speaker you don't have to worry about it:music:
