Like I have nothing else better to do on deadline!

But I did pick up a pair of new Magnepan 1.6's today....

Going to keep them around as another reference point and give
them a run through.

Not ML, but intriguing. Haven't owned a pair in years, so it
will be fun!

1.6 can be made to sound damn good. They are a tweaker s dream too. I ran many Maggies in another life prior to ML.

Don't have an extra $11k laying around for 20.1's.

Listened to them at the local dealer. Nice, but no CLX...

:)

And rumor has it that there will be a replacement for the 20.1 shortly!

Cough, cough

I heard them with good Arc tube equipment in a very large room. I would describe them as providing a "wall of sound" unlike any other speaker I have experienced. But they still couldn't hold a candle to the Logans in every respect that I care about. Can't wait to audition the CLX.

In my last house I had a 2 channel rig in my office utilizing wall mounted MC1s crossed over to a small sub below 100hz.

They were excellent and spacious, but harsh and edgy by comparison to the Summits in the next room. Of course that isn't a fair comparison since the Summits cost 10 times as much and had three times the cost in electronics chain.

Wall-mounted and harsh & edgy? Gee, what a surprise!

When I was purchasing my McIntosh equipment, the dealer at Audio Perfection was playing Magnepan 1.6 qr with a Mac 402 power amp for another customer. As the dealer knew I had Martin Logan Vantages, he said you needed alot a power to make the Magnepans sound great. The Magnepan 1.6 qr sounded pretty good to me with the McIntosh 402.

I kind of like the MC1's..

Great way to get the speakers up off the floor!

That was the idea and I replaced a pair of B&W XT4s that were always in the way and overkill for the 11x10 room and I didn't want to hange bookshelves on the wall.

have you ever heard the mmg I would like to know what you think I was thinking of replacing my fresco i speakers in my living room with them that room is very musical and has a great bass and mid range response the fresco's sound very good and musical but the magnepan really intreuge me I could the mount my fresco's elseware what do you think should I look up the lader with there models I like the ship em to ya and if you don't like em they will ship em back deal and you can upgrade within a year. here is a pic of the room they would go in I do not meen to hijack you thread but I am really curios about these speakers.I really really like my fresco's believe it of not but I think the sound could be a bit bigger and I am addicted to purchasing new HIFI gear.

are they built well?
do they look nice?
do the have a cool factor to the way they look or do they look makeshift ?

here is a early pic of my room so you can get a basic idea of where they would go

I have had many, many electrostats over the last twenty years. A few years ago I picked up a pair of 1.6s as a temporary distraction. I was STUNNED at how good they are for the money. They are unfailingly musical, and much more forgiving than most stats. I used them with the Innersound ESL amp, which can provide the current they crave, and thus fed, they have surprising bass capabilities. No, they don't have that last bit of transparency and detail that electrostats give you, but I still believe they are the best buy in high end speakers. I would bypass the MMGs and pick up a pair of used 1.6s to play with. Another great thing about Maggies - they hold their value, so if you buy used and they aren't your cup of tea, your loss is minimal.

I have to agree with you there, they are a pretty amazing speaker for 1600 bucks!

I've been using them with a Grotto i and it's a pretty nice combination. The folks at Magnepan would probably hack up a fur ball if they heard that....

Not a bad speaker at all, and they've made a ton of them!

It's hard to get a sense of scale from the pic, but it looks like it might be a bit tight in the right corner if that's where you plan to put a Maggie. They'd need to be pulled out from the wall.
Do they look nice / cool factor?? Not sure and it's a matter of personal taste, but they certainly don't look like you neighbors. ;)

I had a set of MMGs and they are excellent speakers for the money. The build quality however is not great. The speakers look home made and I hate the binding posts on the MMGs. 5 way posts would have been much better than a hole with a Allen bolt through it. Again the speakers sounded great. Maybe the best deal around for the money.
