Well, I finally heard from the Grad school I'd applied to. Unfortunately, I won't be entering their MFA program this fall...

But the good news is that I guess I've got a much bigger budget for my system upgrades now than I though...

Time to start thinking about a MAJOR analogue upgrade. Perhaps there is a massive infusion of VPI in my future! :D

When life hands you lemons ............... make lemonade! (That's exactly what I would do!)

Joey,

I will apply again, but they only have admission to their MFA program for the Fall semester, so my next chance to get in is next year (starting fall '08). Aparently they give first pref to their undergrads for admission, and there are only someting like 12 or 18 slots open every year for their program. I guess I need to really start finding ways to get my name known with their faculty over the next year, so I have some sort of "leg up" on the undergrads. I was working under the mistaken impression that 20 years of real-world experience, owning my own presses, and belonging to several letterpress printing associations where I've had my work published, and already having college-level teaching experience would actually mean something to the admission process...

But this gives me a year to work on my portfolio, maybe get a gallery show or two locally, and sort of get my name known out here as an artist and designer.

Howver, all that said, I really think a VPI TNT or a new Subwoofer and Sunfire amp would go a long way to sooth my sadness. Just have to convince my sweety of the same... ;)

Richard, Trust you got my forwarded PM from Tim on the VPI thoughts. I am presently waiting patiently for my Velodyne DD-15 to arrive for integration with my Vantage's, based on what we heard at Dan's I'm hopefull for good things....very good things !!

Dave,

I did get your PM,and I'm currently trying to talk that dealer down on that VPI. If I do get it, you will be the first to know! If I get it, I'll have them put a Dynavector DV-20x-H on it. I'm also looking at an ARC PH-1 to handle the phono preamplification. Do you know anything about them? Aren't you running a PH-3?

And after hearing Dan's ARC SP-16, I've decided that an ARC preamp in in my immediate future. I LOVE the sound of that unit, but I just can't live without those trademark ARC knobs... :p So I think I'm going to try and track down a used ARC LS-15. It's got knobs, a remote control, AND it's got balanced ins and outs--something the SP-16 doesn't have. And if I'm going to move to Sunfire amps, I'd rather hook them up with balanced lines.

However, I've got a line right now on a pair of Carver Silver 7t monoblocks, and if I can get them at a reasonable price, that will make me VERY happy. The old M-500t is a great little amp, but it just doesn't make the Sequels SING like I know they can. The S7t's don't have balanced ins, but I can live with RCAs. I'll just have to order a new pair of longer (2m) White Zombie silver lines...

I'll keep everyone updated, that's for sure. And as soon as any new kit hits my shelves, I will be sure to post pics.

Thank you and Tim for all your helpful input on the analogue upgrades!

Where's all these upgrades coming from????!!!!

Every where I turn, someone's got something or another coming and going...

Joeyitis appears to be very contagious.
Who knows if enough of us get it
we might be able to stimulate the economy.

Rich,

That is unfortunate, but don't let that stop you from applying down the line. It sounds like you have a plan, so make sure you see it through. I know you'll get into that program eventually.

Let me know when you get those upgrades done, but make sure you save some money for a rainy day!

Richard, Unless you have heard the PH-1 and liked it ( I don't) I would seriously remain patient for a PH-3 to come up on the Gon ( typically $750-900). To my ears the PH-1 was more 'sterile' sounding, I'm sure the fact that it's SS and the PH-3 is tube, helps in the latters more lush presentation, but for me it works.

If you can run it I would recommend the DV20X-L. The low output is a step better, faster, more detail w/o edge or brightness than the H. The L will require a SUT with your pres of choice but the end result will be a better analog rig. If you go low than try the Cinemag CM3440 trannies (a DIY) with excellent sound for ca. $100.00.

Thank you both, Dave and risabet, for these pointers. I have heard the PH-1 Dave, and although it was very clean, I'd agree with you that it sounds a little "Krell-Like". I was hoping that by having an ARC preamp (perhaps an LS-15) this would remedy some of that issue. But maybe I'll just wait for the "right" phono pre to come along...

Trying to keep up with the Jones', no no scratch that. We are trying to keep up with Joey. Heard of him?

Richard, Exactly what I meant, trust me for a couple of hundred more (used mkt) the PH-3 will dismiss those thoughts !

Now if the right deal comes along on the Asthetix Rhea, my PH-3 would become available !!
