After my recent series of electrical glitches messing with my Summits and other audio components, I've decided to upgrade to dedicated 20 amp service in my family/listening room. This will likely require running entirely NEW wiring to my breaker panel. I'll also get hospital-grade outlets at the same time.

Anybody have a rough idea of what this might cost (using a certified electrician)? I'm calling some tomorrow for estimates.

If you are talking romex and a 50 ft run it should cost about $300.00 to $500.00.
If you are talking about in conduit then it could $500.00 to $700.00. This is what I was quoted 2 years back. By the way romex is not code legal in Chicago.

Hey "Sleepster", I cant say what it will cost you to have it done, but I did mine myself, 2 - 20 amp lines w / hospital grade outlets for less than $100 in parts. I suspect it will cost you that plus labor, electricians here charge $60-85 per hour.

I would love to do it at my place but my basement is fully finished with all drywall using romex I cannot imagin the mess it would be to run a new line from one end of the basement to the other. :(

Good luck on your project, it will make a great difference. My last home had all dedicated circuits it worked great......Steve

Woohoo! Just got my dedicated 20 amp line installed today, with hospital grade outlet. Was touch and go for a while, as the electrician and his assistant had a helluva time drilling down from the sweltering attic above my cathedral ceiling to run the 12/2 romex. I can't say fidelity is improved, but I feel a lot better knowing my entire audio system is now isolated from the ceiling fan, lights and dimmers, etc. that previously shared that circuit. They did some other work as well, but I think the dedicated line portion ran about $400, which was fair.

Next up for me is improving room acoustics.
