I'm just curious if any of our esteemed members compared bipolar designs when they decided on their MLs. I'm kind of surprised that I haven't seen much discussion about dipolar and bipolar speakers. Back in the day when I was shopping for speakers I listened to some Mirages and, IIRC, some Definitives, and I didn't like them compared to Acoustats or even traditionally boxed stuff like Infinity Kappa 6 or 7. I wound up buying some Mirages, just because I liked them and I got an awesome price on them. The ones I got, though, were their largest non-bipolar bookshelf speakers (M-590 8" bass reflex and 1" dome) and I've been thrilled with them... though not thrilled enough to keep me from replacing them with my Sequels!
I haven't heard a bipolar speaker I've liked yet. I've found the staging to be muddy and, while broad, to be very poorly detailed. It's weird to me that I have found every dipolar speaker I've heard to present a bright, airy, and precise sound stage when the primary difference is the phase of the rear-firing sound. Has anyone else found this to be the case, or am I nuts?
