Could I use a Monolith IIIx active crossover to split my signals for actively bi-amping a pair of Ascents?

Richard,

I don't know if there is a difference between the III and the IIIx but here is my response based on the information from the Monolith III and that the two Models having the same crossover frequency:

I would not use the Monolith crossover with your Ascents. The reason is the crossover frequency is much lower on the Monoliths at 125Hz where your Ascents are crossed over at 280 Hz. Using the Monolith crossover would put a much higher demand on your ESL Panel. Using the Monolith III crossover would send more bass information to the ESL Panel, possibly overdriving it at higher volume levels.

Richard,

As sam indicates, the crossover point is way to low for the Ascents. Also, the Monolith III active, while very nice for it’s day, is totally outclassed by modern speaker processors.

If planning to actively bi-amp, then :
  • A- you will need to bypass the crossover, look at the Tweaks section for a Thread I started on how to do that
  • B- You will need a speaker processor and measurement tools to get it right. I recommend the DBX DriveRack series, but BBE and Peavey also make reasonably priced units that will do the job

I’ll be posting a complete document on how to set up a speaker processor for bi-amping in the near future. I spent 3 hours on it today (on tops of the previous 3 a few months ago) I figure another 3 or 4 hrs and I’ll be ready to post a draft. Yes, it’s long and detailed ;)
