What causes panels to wear out?

When I did active bass on my QuestZ my existing power amplifier continued to power the panel via top speaker terminals. The new Crown XLS received a separate feed from my preamp (you can use y splitters if only one rca output from pre amp) and then powered the woofers via bottom speaker...

What causes panels to wear out?

Stereophile John Atkinson measured a mid base suckout with the QuestZ due to cross over notch (see below). I’ve raised the QuestZ 125hz subwoofer crossover to 200/250hz but that is getting close to upper frequency capability of Eminence stock woofer. I’m inclined to replace woofers with a...

What causes panels to wear out?

I’m considering changing my original Questz woofers. If using the std passive bass crossover pretty sure all recommendations are 4 ohms. Now that I’m active on the bass also curious if sticking with 4 ohms is the recommendation. Certainly would allow going back to passive crossover again if a...

What causes panels to wear out?

Might check if the 4ohm version is recommended vs 8ohm. My QuestZ are 4ohm woofers.

    How to: active bass section

Merely to avoid the effort to bypass the panel cross over by feeding it a signal that has already been adjusted to above 200hz vs full range signal to be trimmed at 125hz by the passive crossover. Theoretical exercise. Will look at effort required to bypass the panel crossover.

    How to: active bass section

I’ve gone active on bass with support of this group and am enjoying the results. Could a dsp unit be positioned to raise the effective cross over point for the panel without bypassing the panel passive crossover?

Passive Crossover bypass – Quest / reQuest

Just did it. Even better to go step 2 and bypass the bass crossover circuit completely by using external crossover or amp with crossover. Lots of info here.

    How to: active bass section

Completed the bass XO bypass and added new binding posts for the direct woofer connection leaving original XO wiring in place. Set the Crown XO at 200hz and really pleased with the improved bass and meat on the bone sound. Will experiment with the XO and gain but so far big improvement...

    How to: active bass section

Finally passively biamped my QuestZ with a Crown XLS 1502. Still subject to the stock 125 hz crossover that causes the upper bass suckout and contributes to QuestZ lean sound (per Stereophile) but otherwise pleased. Next step to bypass the bass crossover and rewire binding posts direct to...

You would be amazed how easy a powerline can be fished through finished ceilings by a talented wire puller.

Issue with Sequel II's Woofer (TORN)

My Aragon 8008ST has dual speaker outputs that facilitate separate biwire channels from the amp to speaker inputs. I have played with changing the phase on the panel and woofers with noticeable difference in bass performance. Maybe the woofers were out of phase with the sub or possibly the...
