Moving from 5.1 to 2 channel

Hello mccallan, Sorry I re-read your post and see that you do not have a subwoofer. Still, everything mentioned still applies sans subwoofer. To figure out if you will lose the LFE will depend on your source material and your source components and your surround sound processor. Source...

Moving from 5.1 to 2 channel

Regarding how you should setup your system, it really depends on your processor/pre-amp. If you are using a pre-amp then you will have to make changes in the source components to reflect that you have a 2 channel setup and connect the MLs to the high-level outputs (binding posts) of the...

    Hasta la Vista

Hello IWalker, Well I was going to go through all of your points but I thought is was coming off a bit rude and I don't want to anger people. So here are my points. - There is a such thing as fair use rights. This right was enshrined by the Supreme Court when content providers sued Sony...

And in all actuality, Apple is the Mini-Me of Microsoft. Seriously though, your point about the need for DRM might be valid if it had a snowball's chance in Hell at stopping piracy. It does not stop piracy. It never will. Call me paranoid but I do not think that is DRM's true purpose at all.

    Hasta la Vista

I doubt that the content industry pushed anything on MS. They are a monopoly for crying out loud. If they wanted to they could easily have said no. Nope, MS went to the content industry and said, "Hey instead of you guys figuring out how to implement DRM to protect your content, let us do it...

To 7.1 or not to 7.1, that is the question.

Another concern is music. What is the positioning of your surround speakers? Is it 90 degrees to the listener? Also, I would like a 7.1 system but the couch is going to be against the back wall. I am thinking that in-walls above the listener might work. Anybody have any thoughts on that setup?

To 7.1 or not to 7.1, that is the question.

A re-flooring project has my 7.1 system currently dismantled. While surveying the complete room I thought how much better the room would be served if I rearranged my speaker placements. Unfortunately this would require that I go from a 7.1 system to a 5.1 system. Has anyone on this forum...

    Bose Bash Article???

They spend a ton on advertising. Make questionable claims. And sale a product that is made as cheaply as possible. (Sounds like the cable industry but I don't see any audiophiles up in arms about that.) As a former owner of their flagship product (901s and it was my first "hi-fi" purchase...

    I saw blu-ray today

Sung to the tune of Metallica's Last Caress: I got something to say I saw Blu-ray today and It doesn't matter much to me until it wins the format war I got something to say I saw Blu-ray today and It doesn't matter much to me until Sony replaces my root-kit CDs Chorus: These lovely HDTVs...

    HDMI nonsense

Lord of the Cables Three Cables for Component Video or Composite plus sound destined to die, Six Cables for Dolby Digital, DTS, Pro-Logic, SACD, and DVD-A doomed to be outdated. Eight Cables for DD EX, DTS ES, Logic 7, TrueHD, and Master Audio with their confusing naming conventions. Two for...

    HDMI nonsense

OK I have been meaning to upgrade but this HDMI nonsense has got me confused. If anybody can help me with some information it would be greatly appreciated. 1. I believe that the HDMI standards are not forwards compatiable. Meaning that HDMI 1.1 will not pass an audio signal like HDMI 1.3...

    I'm Hooked on HD DVD

Sure get an old gen BD player cheap...or get a current gen HD-DVD player for the same price. Here is a link for the undecided: http://www.hometheatersound.com/features/editorial/20061001.htm It is a little dated (Oct 06). Sony is able to produce dual-layer BD's now.

    I'm Hooked on HD DVD

Zip, how can you possibly NOT see the Sony exec with the gun to my head!?!?! Help please!!! Just kidding. That quote was more of a rhetorical statement. Yes I am not being forced to buy Sony products, but that does not mean I have no right to state the reasons why will not buy them. I...

    Please recommend Surround receiver

I always ignore wattage ratings for speakers. It is a useless metric. Nobody even knows what it means. It really is just marketing.

Please tell me if this is a really stupid idea or if it may work?

The sub in a cabinet would probably work very will if you replace the doors with grills of some sort. Maybe have doors made that are grills with a wood frame. The only thing I would worry about is the cabinet vibrating. Or you could buy a cheap sub such as an Athena, Polk Audio, etc. and not...

    I'm Hooked on HD DVD

Things Sony has left to do: 1. Compete with HD-DVD players in the price catagory. HD-DVD player - @$500 Blu-Ray -@$1000 I know that the PS3 is out there (if you can find one) but it is a clunky player at best and has a few annoying problems with blu-ray play back. It is a gaming machine...

    Please recommend Surround receiver

If you are stuck in receiverland (like me), at that price range you cannot go wrong with Denon or Harmon Kardon. You will get a bigger bang for your buck by buying used as well. Those brands are pretty much bulletproof when it comes to reliability. In your case it would be better to try and...
