I've tried the DiaLogue 2's little brother, the DiaLogue 1, with a pair of Spires and with the DiaLogue 1's EL34s replaced with KT88s. I thought the sound was great, but with some dynamic limitations (which, given the DL 1's modest output, isn't too surprising). So it's definately worth a try...

I can't speak for the big Expedit racks, but my 3 x 3 rack from Home Depot seems sturdy enough: A few more records have been added since that pic was taken, but you get the gist.

Probably nearer 700 (you don't want to pack 'em in too tight), but that sort of order, yeah. The one to which you linked (or one of its bigger brothers) is the one I'm thinking of buying.

The Expedit series of racks from Ikea look like they work very well. I'm planning to pick some up sooner or later.

The usual concensus (and I concur) is that longer interconnects with shorter speaker cables is the lesser of two evils. I have my system set up that way: longish (6m) interconnect between my preamp and monoblocks, and 2m speaker cables.

I'm not Jeff, but permit me to chuck in my $0.02 anyway: I've not actually heard the UPA-1, but I would guess that its builtin phono stage is probably not that good. So "it'll do" for now, but you'd probably want to upgrade it sooner rather than later.

I'd avoid buying used vintage stuff if I were you because you have no idea on how well it was looked after. For a few hundered bucks you can pick up a brand new entry level turntable complete with cartridge. A couple examples are the Pro-Ject Debut III, the Music Hall MF 2.1, and the Rega P1...
