    Quake bracing for CLXs?

I'm using 304 stainless steel aircraft cable, 1/8". That has a breaking strength of 2100 pounds, which should be enough! If I can rig it correctly, I should be able to attach the cable to the wall with a friction sleeve and extra length, so it will "soft" catch the speaker if it tips forward...

    Quake bracing for CLXs?

It's just leverage. If I grab it at the top, I have 70.3" of leverage. If I weight it, I have only 14.69" of leverage, and because the weights would probably press down evenly on the whole 14.69", I have to divide that by half (on average), so it's 70.3 : (14.69 / 2), which is about 9.5 : 1. So...

    Quake bracing for CLXs?

I think I have a solution. On the tops of the CLXs, there are a couple of foam blocks. Under those are some allen-head screws. Some high-tensile stainless-steel cabling could be custom-made to be swaged into eyelets, the eyelets held down by the allen-head screws (perhaps replacing the...

    Quake bracing for CLXs?

We live in the Santa Cruz mountains, a few miles from the epicenter of the 1989, magnitude 6.9, Loma Prieta earthquake. I noticed that a CLX can be tipped forward by just a few pounds of tension on the top. A quake would likely cause our CLXs to topple. If we're lucky, it would just smash the...

    Hum from Descent i

I'm really glad I found this thread. This is exactly the symptom our right Descent-i is exhibiting. Thank you!

Recommended rear speakers to use with CLX/Decent-i/Theater-i?

We started years ago with just some Quests in the front. Then we went to 5.1: upgraded to Prodigies in the front, moved the Quests to the back, and added a Theater-i center. Now we've upgraded the fronts to CLXs, and moved the Prodigies to the back. But the Prodigies in the back kind of take...

Painting CLX anniversary edition aluminum frames?

When I told the guy who sold me our CLX anniversaries that I was going to paint them, he looked startled and looked at me like I was a Martian. He encouraged me to set them up and see how they looked before doing anything silly. He also said of all the speakers he has brought home, his wife said...

Painting CLX anniversary edition aluminum frames?

I'd love to read those details, but as I said in my follow up post, I don't see your PM, nor do I see the ones I sent to you. My Private Messages is empty.

Painting CLX anniversary edition aluminum frames?

I don't like the shape of the art frame. It looks like something Tim Burton would design. Give me strict rectilinear.

Painting CLX anniversary edition aluminum frames?

I tried to send a PM to ask for details on how to paint, but for some reason the PM (and a second try) doesn't show in my sent items. So I'll ask here. GaryG, when you were quoted $200 to paint the frames, how were they going to do it? Were you going to take the complete speakers to their...

Painting CLX anniversary edition aluminum frames?

Not true for the anniversary edition with the aluminum frames. They were only ever manufactured in aluminum and black.

Painting CLX anniversary edition aluminum frames?

Thanks to all for your replies. I didn't know they were ever available in black. I'll keep an eye out for a pair of those used, although being rarer they will probably cost more. Thanks for the info about painting and anodizing. I assume painting would require dismantling, to remove the risk of...

Painting CLX anniversary edition aluminum frames?

I want to get a pair of the CLXs with the aluminum frames, but the color is wrong. It won't look correct in the room, and it will glint when the lights are off and we're watching a movie. Has anyone tried painting, anodizing, or otherwise coloring the frames? If so, how well did it turn out, and...

    Lifetime Service for MartinLogan Products

Wow--what a great announcement from a great company! Now I'm even more inclined to track down a pair of CLXs.

Weird gradually degrading sound in Prodigy speaker

The noise is in the front left/right speakers. The noise isn't a buzz. It's kind of hard to describe--basically when a singer hits a note in the high-midrange/low-treble, instead of pure, sweet sound coming out, it breaks up into an unpleasant rasp, as if all timbre has been lost. The effect is...

Weird gradually degrading sound in Prodigy speaker

Well, the problem continues Replaced the panels and the DECs, and there is still a weird brittle rasp in the high midrange/low treble.

Unable to install new Prodigy panels, help greatly appreciated

This problem can be fixed with a Dremel tool, two Demel bits, an X-acto knife, and an air compressor. Put the first bit--a small-diameter cylindrical cutter--in the tool, and use it to elongate the screw holes in the panel's plastic rails. You need at least 1/16" more room, and probably more...

Unable to install new Prodigy panels, help greatly appreciated

That's annoying--I thought these were drop-in replacements. Maybe the frame has changed over time? They included instructions in the box that show how to remove the plastic that runs down each side of the panels, and reinstall it. Am I supposed to remove the plastic that runs each side of the...

Unable to install new Prodigy panels, help greatly appreciated

The old panels came off easily, and the top two screws of the first new panel went in okay after a bit of a struggle, but the remaining screws are impossible to thread. I followed the instructions in the service manual meticulously, but am stuck on this step: "Re-install the 8 remaining...
