Expression 13A Speakers – Predictions Please - and Questions

Pretty depressingly, they're for sale - see my ad in Classified. I'll be selling the Sanders Magtech too as it suits the MLs very well - hopefully as a package to a UK buyer. The 13As just don't match the sense of musical excitement or of "being there" compared with the Unos. Even with...

    AMP needed for ML ESLx

Sorry, I sent this post twice but can't fully delete the second one!

    AMP needed for ML ESLx

As a non-expert ML owner - having bought my first MLs last month - I can attest that the Sanders amp is very good indeed. However with your budget you won't get monos, but do you really need them? The stereo version is 4-500 watts into 8 ohms and 900 or so into 4, so surely plenty to drive...

I suppose there's no harm in trying Dirac - if it sounds worse, you can disengage it easily. I'd be interested in your experience because NAD are signed up to Dirac, although my particular units are not Dirac-enabled. Whether this will be possible with future firmware updates I don't know...

Expression 13A Speakers – Predictions Please - and Questions

I'll be most interested on your comments about spikes vs Gaias. My floors are indeed solid timber on screed on concrete, so pretty solid. To protect the floor, I don't like to use spikes, even with protector shoes. I prefer to place my slate slabs on insulation sheets under the spiked...

Expression 13A Speakers – Predictions Please - and Questions

It took 2 of us 90 minutes to replace the spikes on the Avantgardes with Gaias and to install the spikes in the MLs in place of the Gaias - taking care not to stab the floor or our hands and to stand the MLs on the slate slabs. Now, as for the sound, it has made a marginal difference though we...

Expression 13A Speakers – Predictions Please - and Questions

When I had my 13As on order, I bought a set of Gaia II feet together with 3/8" threads. The 13A (and 11A and 15A) have an electronics board that is removable by first removing the sockets that spikes / Gaias are screwed into. These have the threaded part starting well into the sockets to allow...

Mine are gloss black too - stunning finish - ordered in early December and delivered early January after a long sea (I presume) voyage. I've had that Titti! album for years. It's one that you often see mentioned by reviewers, but (if I remember correctly) it was also one of Jim Smith's...

Expression 13A Speakers – Predictions Please - and Questions

Thanks again for your helpful suggestions and observations about your own 13As. I'm well over the 100 hour mark now and play a wide range of music - including Brian Eno (Drawn from Life and Apollo), plus radio. Yes, I have a simple un-calibrated Sound Meter app on my phone. I'm seeing a...

Expression 13A Speakers – Predictions Please - and Questions

Ttocs and Peacefulcargo - Thanks all for your constructive suggestions and ideas. This is most encouraging. Your mention of cables, etc has prompted me to concoct a sketch of my 2 systems (Martin Logan and Avantgarde), so you can see that I’m doing all I can to favour the MLs. They have the...

Thanks. In fact Anthony suggested a more powerful amplifier for my large room. I went from my most powerful 200 watt GamuT D200 to a 400 watt Sanders Magtech. Although it's improved the sound a little (reducing the screeching on loud crescendos), soloists are seemingly still far further away...

To tube, or not to tube?

Another Class A amp with seemingly far less power than is needed for electrostatics is the beautifully-built Accuphase A-36. Only 30 watts at 8 ohms but 120 at 2 ohms or 150 into 1 ohm and plenty powerful enough.

Expression 13A Speakers – Predictions Please - and Questions

Give Roger Sanders a call in US. Bizarrely, you'll have to key in your own phone number (omit the 0) before incoming calls are accepted. Once you're through, you'll find an enlightening attitude to marketing audio equipment. He couldn't be more helpful and will offer to send you a new amp...

Expression 13A Speakers – Predictions Please - and Questions

Thanks Roni, Mac and James My Micromega sounds good but (with the 13As) is bettered by some of my other amps. The Room Correction may improve the 13A sound, although probably won't prevent clipping which I think contributed to its problems. Incidentally the Micromega powering Focal Supra 2...

To tube, or not to tube?

Steve I'm not a tube expert though I used various SETs with my high efficiency horn speakers for many years. As a generalisation, the magic from tubes is best appreciated with SET designs rather than Push Pull. This presents you with 2 problems. SETs don't offer sufficient power for ESLs at...

How do you take your Logans? Straight up or on the rocks?

Better to ask if people have CHANGED the angle from how the speaker is built. So a 13A starts with a 5 degree backward tilt, but the 15A is vertical. Therefore owners who choose say 3 degrees would answer LESS if they own a 13A but MORE if the own a 15A. It would be useful yo know if people...

    I'm Gettin' Itchy for a 11A!

No this is effectively my first panel speaker, though I had Quad 2905s for a few months last year. For 18 years I've been enjoying Avantgarde Uno speakers, but they never sounded quite as good in my present listening room as in my one in London. Quad was introduced to me by a friend - met...
