    ML sub specs

XMAX is calculated differently by different manufacturers as well. Some calculate linear BL Xmax while others use hard lock-up xmax. Being servo-controlled...the xmax isn't as important, since the servo's going to prevent you from ever really reaching it. You can reverse engineer the XMAX...

good luck! let us know how it turns out. Your process/results would go great in the DIY section.

tweaking the sub in older MLs

Ok, right. Good call. High Level inputs. you'd still want the crossover between the plate amp and the woofer, though...else you don't that matched...sure you can use the plate amp's controls if you want...but not ideal, imo. That was my point...I know there's plenty of internal volume for a...

First Audition of New Stats. Heresy to follow!

Yeah...who's to say what's more accurate to the true recording...(I'm sure it could be tested) but the sound was much less coherent and less accurate to the actual instruments (I can't attest to voices...since I haven't heard the people I was listening to in person) ... The string instruments (I...

    The musicophile v. the audiophile

Ditto. To the word. Being the DIY nut I am...I've DOWNgraded my system in terms of overall retail value, from close to $10k to closer to $5k...and what I've paid is less that that...but building things to improve upon perceived shortages gives me joy, both from the building aspect, and from...

tweaking the sub in older MLs

Haha, I know the feeling, I love the DIY aspect as well. There are a few considerations, though. 1. Resale. You will never be able to resell the speakers if you cut them up. If you bi-amp them you will. 2. in order to get a plate amp to work, you'd need to have dual line-level...

tweaking the sub in older MLs

NicksPicks, what this is doing is essentially just bi-amping the speakers. Get 2 amps, run signal to both from the pre, and then run one set of wires to the panels and one set to the woofers (these do have 2 sets of binding posts per speaker, right?) By using a plate amp, you're just making...

New way to protect your Summits and Vantages

Oh, that sucks!!! Guess he gets a free pass on this one. Looks like Jason might be up to bat ;)

First Audition of New Stats. Heresy to follow!

Went back and spent another evening with the speakers (they move to my place on saturday). Did some A/Bing again (stayed for about 4 hours) and stand by my first impressions. The comparison of vocal for me, which was particulary present on Norah Jones' first CD, was that the summits sounded...

    DIY "Line Array Test" Boxes

http://www.outwater.com/pdf_files/opi/RolledCork.pdf If you're interested, the Pliable MDF from the link above is what I plan on using to get the desired effect.

Very true, Dreamer...that remains to be seen in my personal case. Being an overseas company means that the dealer and distributor become a bigger factor in the customer service relationship. In my research, it looks like the old final models had some issues, but the new ones have been pretty solid.

If a Pass X250 can't do it, though...that makes it a difficult proposition, no?

It's certainly a real possibility that's it's HF artifacts...it's really hard for me to determine what it might be. I hate being this imprecise, since I am at heart a measurements guy...but what it seems like is almost "beaming"...there must be some sort of HF spike with the summits that causes...

    DIY "Line Array Test" Boxes

Thanks a lot...I really appreciate the responses. I'll check out the cult site...I've perused it before...but definitely need to give it a better look. Yeah, I figure I'm going to make my current arrays closed back at some point...but my plan is to eventually (as finances permit) use the...

    hummmmmmmm

Yeah, some components are succeptible to ground loop hums, while others are not. http://www.epanorama.net/documents/groundloop/video_isolation.html That has a good explanation, I think...and should give you something to isolate the cable ground from the rest of the system. (links at the...

    hummmmmmmm

Agreed. 60 cycle hum is almost surely a ground loop...and the issues I've had with it have generally been related to cable connections. There are cheap connectors you can get that will screw into the cable connection and fix the issue.

I'm going to try to make it down to your GTG, if I'm free...and would definitely be interested to hear that shootout...especially since I think the sl3 panel you have is of similar size to the final. As I likely won't have my own closed back array (using maybe the Usher 8945A instead of the P...

First Audition of New Stats. Heresy to follow!

Another point to note...these things are lower efficiency than most logans...so probably need some pretty solid amplification to sound good at volume. My audition was on a Pass X250, and sounded great (but the meter was showing more power usage per given volume than on the summits)

Thanks for your impressions! You're right about the sub...and I can't wait to mate it to my rythmik servo...I'll post more impressions then. I'm also going to be putting my woofer array's into the mix...so that's another crossover involved. Passive crossovers have certain issues that active...
