Didn't think the WAF was all that low on the rotary woofer...I think it's the NAF that's the problem. (N=Neighbor) Venting a subwoofer that's good down to DC into the open air of your neighborhood would probably make more than a few people unhappy.

At which point the question becomes...what is a speaker manufacturer's goal? As JonFo points out, a lot of it is to influence the psychological aspects...but beyond that, it is either to create an artificially "pleasing" sound that has characteristics that make a good first impression on...

I think the better way to say it is...we can measure pretty much everything that goes on IN our system (and in our rooms) very precisely, but we can't measure our own reaction to the system very well at all. Psychoacoustics (I want this $10k speaker to sound better than this $5k one) , sonic...

even through digital out of the sound card? Try an M-Audio USB sound card...they do much better. I'm very happy with the quality from my card. Squeezebox works well too.

Squeezebox or External Soundcard (usb).

Use a squeezebox which will take the signal over wireless and can then go out to a dac, or a USB sound card (with a digital out, like the M-Audio Sonica Theater, like I have) which can then connect to a normal dac.

That's also oversimplification. You can't just test distortion, because it doesn't tell the whole picture. Amplifiers are a whole different ballgame than speakers as well...considering that the amount of distortion let off by all but the worst of amps is inaudible. There's no benefit going...
