    NC listening get together

Didn't think the WAF was all that low on the rotary woofer...I think it's the NAF that's the problem. (N=Neighbor) Venting a subwoofer that's good down to DC into the open air of your neighborhood would probably make more than a few people unhappy.

    NC listening get together

Can I pick up habbit food at my local pet store? :D Edit: Habbit looked like rabbit to me upon first reading...so I thought it said "someone to feed my rabbit." :D

    NC listening get together

Sounds to me like you need one of these http://www.rotarywoofer.com/ to really round out the bottom few octaves! I'll bring my homemade rythmik servo sub, if anyone's system can accomodate one...thing's a real b*tch to carry though.

    NC listening get together

Hey now...no trolling the thread, unless you're intending to make a trip down to NC! Don't you have some gear you need to go upgrade? :D

    It's here!!

Very nice! But is it really going to be big enough to see from the desede chair you get for an early Christmas present?

    Anyone excited over Spiderman 3?

Who's got 2 thumbs and is excited about it? THIS GUY! Don't have specific plans to see it...but it'll happen sometime this weekend...especially with the dismal weather we're having. I mean, SOMEONE's gotta help cover the reported half billion it took to make it, right? :D

    Sure, why not! :D

    Summit placement

Agreed. Minimizes comb filtering between the front wave and rear wall reflections and "smearing" from having those reflections to close together in time.

At which point the question becomes...what is a speaker manufacturer's goal? As JonFo points out, a lot of it is to influence the psychological aspects...but beyond that, it is either to create an artificially "pleasing" sound that has characteristics that make a good first impression on...

I think the better way to say it is...we can measure pretty much everything that goes on IN our system (and in our rooms) very precisely, but we can't measure our own reaction to the system very well at all. Psychoacoustics (I want this $10k speaker to sound better than this $5k one) , sonic...

    Computer to DAC

even through digital out of the sound card? Try an M-Audio USB sound card...they do much better. I'm very happy with the quality from my card. Squeezebox works well too.

    Computer to DAC

    Squeezebox or External Soundcard (usb).

    Computer to DAC

Use a squeezebox which will take the signal over wireless and can then go out to a dac, or a USB sound card (with a digital out, like the M-Audio Sonica Theater, like I have) which can then connect to a normal dac.

    Something blew!

The thread topic made me think of "something old, something new, something borrowed"... :D Sorry for the non-sequiter. Couldn't help myself.

One of many important tradeoffs in high end audio. Everyone has a different set of compromises they must make!

Yep, noone said it was EASY getting a great system that does everything right! Good bass response with a good power response curve requires a lot of air to be moved. IB subs do the best with that in terms of required in room space, construction costs, etc. But require more drivers and the...

That's also oversimplification. You can't just test distortion, because it doesn't tell the whole picture. Amplifiers are a whole different ballgame than speakers as well...considering that the amount of distortion let off by all but the worst of amps is inaudible. There's no benefit going...

Oh wow, I love that couch too!!! Looks like a new item for the "when I get a house" list!

The concept of synergy between components is that the changes imparted by each component compliment each other (in the case of a system where accuracy is key...they cancel each other) Just because we can't identify what the measurable differences between systems that we enjoy differently are...
