Heard a Quad 57 system and almost s**t in my pants

If you were listening to a SuperNait, that's probably the slight forward character. You should hear some Quads on a small tube amp or a Nait 2... The Quads do midrange as well as anything. And with the right setup can be amazing. Caelin Gabriel at Shunyata has a pair in his listening room...

    Amplifier recommendation please !

There are two distinctly different sounds from the Pass Labs camp: the more standard Class AB amps and the Class A amps. The AB amps have a more neutral tonality than the Class A, which have a richer tonality (and run much warmer). I'd compare the sound of the AB amps pretty closely to the...

    Krell

The diff with Gayle Sanders is that he sold the biz. D'Agostino was kind of forcefully removed. Kind of weird. It will be interesting to see if he just retires or does something else. He hasn't designed the last few generations of amps anyway, so that's probably what put him in a weak...

Very long digital coax cable OK?

I've got a 20 foot cable and have had a bit of glitching from time to time with my Sooloos on high res files. Went back to a standard 3 foot cable, and the problem is solved. If I were going to try a long SPDIF cable again, I would go with something much higher quality than Blue Jeans. I know...

You really need to listen to some gear and see what you prefer... Find the sound you like and go after it.

Audio Research 40th Anniversary Reference Line Stage Preamp

You've definitely got the setup for it. I am very anxious to hear the REF 2 in my system as well. I've heard it at a few friends houses and thought it was excellent. I have spent a lot of time with the PH7 and still find it perhaps a little too neutral/sterile, whatever for my taste. The...

I say go all the way and get seven 1.2kw's! That's why I'm a 2ch guy!

Audio Research 40th Anniversary Reference Line Stage Preamp

What are PH7's going for used these days? Aren't they about $6000 new? If so, the PH7 and another $7k isn't a horrible deal... How's the rest of your analog front end? What are you using for a table and cart again? Will you be able to take advantage of the 2nd phono input? If not, you...

Audio Research 40th Anniversary Reference Line Stage Preamp

Good call. McIntosh has had good luck with limited edition anniversary editions as well. I'm guessing the REF 5 is something most could live with just fine!

Help a HT guy discover 2 channel

Id grab a used Threshold 400A, which you should be able to pick up for about $5-600 bucks, a Krell PAM 5 preamp (solid state) or an ARC SP-9 preamp or CJ-PV10 preamp (tubes). You should be able to get either of these three for about $5-700. The Krell is pretty neutral, the ARC slightly warm...

Re-birth of hifi for the masses?

Gotta agree, there are more great choices, new and used than ever.

I'd be really surprised if it changed all that much....

    An excellent observation....

    Minor system upgrade

Just depends on how much power you think you need. The older ARC amplifiers are actually a bit more romantic sounding, compared to the newer ones that are slightly more neutral. A very nice balance, that should give you enough juice to drive a pair of ML's would be the VT-100. There are three...

    New Ride!

Great car! As for the R8, my good friend that takes care of Seinfeld's fleet of Porsches told me that the R8 is an amazing car, and will probably not hold it's value as a collectible, so if I want one, to wait a few years. In the meantime, I'm thinkin a TT roadster will hold me over!

Second arm wand and cartridge - wacky?

Excellent point, and having an extra cart or two really makes it easier to enjoy a wider range of vinyl, as they are all mastered differently!
