Crazy idea from a CHEAPSKATE (Me) - Low powered tube amp?

Spike, you are a fountain of information! Agreed. The limits of my experience with tube audio is the guy I bought my Aeons from. Read above - of course it sounded, well...magical! I think my ML's sound spectacular on my SS amp. But I want to experiment with different music, different sounds...

Crazy idea from a CHEAPSKATE (Me) - Low powered tube amp?

Ah some humor, thank you! I am a newcomer in someone else's home, and given my eclectic interests, this isnt my first time in this situation, so not entirely unexpected. but your observation is quite astute! very well put. 3-5k ought to land some decent shiny stuff...I'll be going the other...

Crazy idea from a CHEAPSKATE (Me) - Low powered tube amp?

glad to hear it. so much of communication is lost over text. yes, exactly why I am posting. And though I am rather surprised at the numerous comments attached to guests being in my house (it was only an example meant for illustration folks!) I have also received some very excellent...

Crazy idea from a CHEAPSKATE (Me) - Low powered tube amp?

Oh, I get my share of that too! But really, what's more insane? My next door neighbor with his 5 bedroom house for 2 people and an un-driven convertible in that 3 car garage, or an "insane" audio enthusiast with a few thousand dollars worth of stuff built to last a lifetime? I say sell that...

Crazy idea from a CHEAPSKATE (Me) - Low powered tube amp?

Nah, Gordon, I think you're focusing too much on the "when guests are over" part . I think I'm not getting my point across...I'm not trying to show off to anyone, I just like to try things. That's just one of many appeals, with no particular importance. If you saw my garage, you'd see all the...

Crazy idea from a CHEAPSKATE (Me) - Low powered tube amp?

I'm not sure I understand the capacitive load part. Isn't that precisely why there's a transformer inside the speaker? To present the amplifier with a load it is designed to drive and step that up to the very high voltage that charges the panel? If all we needed was good control over high...

OK, now we're talkin! I've got some reading to do I see.

Crazy idea from a CHEAPSKATE (Me) - Low powered tube amp?

Indeed...it could be helpful to hear other setups. Back in the car stereo days (sorry, neighbors!) that's how i did it, and i must say it was easier to hear and decide than it is to read online and decide. This being the main reason I joined MLO (thanks Tom).

Crazy idea from a CHEAPSKATE (Me) - Low powered tube amp?

Yep, that's it...just for fun. Well put, you took the words out of my mouth ...er...keyboard...er...you know what i mean. I cant wait for my brother-in-law to come over for christmas and ask me how I got a bunch of light bulbs to make music come out of a couple window screens! the blessing...

Crazy idea from a CHEAPSKATE (Me) - Low powered tube amp?

Spike, thank you very much for the links! There is so much information on MLO that I find it difficult to navigate, it's not for lack of trying to answer my own questions by searching. Being that I dont get to spend as much time as I'd like on various forums, maybe I'm just no good at sifting...

Crazy idea from a CHEAPSKATE (Me) - Low powered tube amp?

conversation piece, believe me nobody I know has ever seen a working tube amp. anyhow I think you've narrowed in on the wrong part - I've been itching to try a tube amp, and there are occasions when I dont need loud volume, like when guests are in the house for example.

Crazy idea from a CHEAPSKATE (Me) - Low powered tube amp?

Please enlighten me? What would happen with the SET amp arrangement? Would it let the smoke out of something? Honestly, I've been able to drive my Aeon's with everything I've tried. From a tired old 1991 junky pioneer receiver to an OK-ish Sony TA-N55ES Power amp...even a 25 watt car stereo...

Crazy idea from a CHEAPSKATE (Me) - Low powered tube amp?

Hi All, I have been positively itching for a tube amp, but I just can't afford an all tube system for daily use... Specifically I was wondering if anyone has actually tried something like this, not whether it's possible or not (though, opinions are welcome of course). Has anyone tried one of...

trying to make the best of a bad situation

OK, looks like time for me to start pricing USB - S/PDIF converters. As mentioned earlier, a Stello u3 would be high on the list? Another MLO member suggested a Stello, so that's 2 for 2.

trying to make the best of a bad situation

Thanks, I'm starting to see the benefit of USB to S/PDIF...this way I can use whatever DAC comes my way. Right now, that would be my B&K preamp which seems pretty OK. Maybe I'll be happy with that, maybe not. I could always get a better DAC though. But If I get a USB DAC my choices are more...

trying to make the best of a bad situation

Thanks, I'm glad you like your DacMagic! I have seen it mentioned quite a bit. As for quality, that's just it...I am getting sound quality as good or better off my CABLE BOX using TOSlink as I am my computer using a 3.5mm to RCA cable! Can't have that! I may try a few cheap-o things but a USB...

trying to make the best of a bad situation

Hello, I've been searching, but still confused. Can anybody tell me what's the best route (on a budget) for using my computer as the audio source? TOSlink off the motherboard sound card? Or off the soundblaster card? Does it even matter - won't my preamp's dac do the d/a work in that case? I...

Hello, just got my first set of Logans! Time for a couple upgrades though...

Hmmm... perhaps you're right. To me, an integrated amp is basically an amp with a volume control - as opposed to no volume control or just a gain screw in back. (i.e. a preamp isn't strictly necessary). Then again, there is only 1 set of inputs (RCA) and you might say the gain screw just got...

Hello, just got my first set of Logans! Time for a couple upgrades though...

thanks, i've been eyeballing those crown amps for another project If the stars allign right maybe I'll get a chance to sneak it home for a few days and try! The system I have now has been cobbled together on a shoestring. It is certainly loud enough, but a little harsh, especially the...
