Passive Crossover bypass – Quest / reQuest

Here's the schematic I posted. Off the cuff a modified panel drive circuit would include a large series cap like C2 170uF (which is about 6 ohms at 150Hz) and possibly some series R as shown. To really give an authoritative answer on what would be electrically correct, I would need some guidance...

Passive Crossover bypass – Quest / reQuest

Yes, this one type of implementation I had in mind. I had anticipated using a Lynx AES16 card to output AES/EBU to two AES/EBU DACS like Schitt Yggdrasil, as I have learned I'm partial to the sound of the R2R ladder DAC chip topology. I'm not sure if the better clock of the Lynx card compared...

    Missing bass punch on Quest?

Are you suggesting new drivers, or a brand new pair of floor standing speakers? New drivers would seem to be a completely valid suggestion.

    Missing bass punch on Quest?

Capacitors have non-ideal characteristics such as Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR). I would expect a good engineer to account for this and other parameters in their design.

    Missing bass punch on Quest?

Yes, the Dayton woofers have a better defined bass. I'm not completely sure what the aging mechanisms are for a dynamic driver. I know permanent magnets can weaken over time, and the "spider" voice coil suspension can wear also. How the drivers will sound to your ears in your room is hard to...

    Missing bass punch on Quest?

I looked up your Mark Levinson 333 amp, it is impressive. Never hurts to include a link in your posts for lazy readers. It is every bit as powerful as the Parasound JC5 I use, if not more so. So an underpowered amp wouldn't be suspect, except it's an old amp. Dried out capacitors in the power...

    Missing bass punch on Quest?

Are you sure you don't have Request II? I don't find Quest II specs on ML's website. The woofer specs and crossover freq are different from my Quest z so probably not appropriate to suggest the same replacement driver. You might ask ML for their suggested replacement if you think yours aren't...

Hi from San Jose, blew up my Quest Z woofers

Never would I have guessed 100% was gain. While ASUS makes decent hardware, their software and documentation could be better.

Hi from San Jose, blew up my Quest Z woofers

I set the volume for the fronts in the ASUS mixer tab to 100%, then reduced the gain of the rears to match the sound pressure levels. Before I had both front and rear less than 100%.

Hi from San Jose, blew up my Quest Z woofers

Yes, Questz do pretty well as full-range speakers IMHO, although a more elaborate system with subs, etc, would no doubt improve the lows especially for home theater. I do have plans to eventually implement a digital crossover in the PC, and drive the panels separately from the woofers using two...

    Quest Restoration Project

When I replaced the woofers (photos here) in my Questz ML recommended I use Dayton Audio DCS305-4 12" Classic Subwoofer 4 Ohm, Parts Express #295-204. I guess there are some differences in the crossovers between the Quest and Questz that affect subwoofer choices? It looks like the Peerless is an...

    Quest Restoration Project

I have fairly new panels, so should be OK for a while. I did read about the repairs to your high-voltage power supplies. Hopefully I don't have to go there, but at least will be able to do it if needed thanks to your documentation.

Hi from San Jose, blew up my Quest Z woofers

Thanks for the reminder. I just took these photos of the old OEM ML driver on the left, and the Dayton Audio replacement on the right. It is my opinion the Dayton driver sounds better, with tighter more controlled response at the very low end of the range. Probably the larger vented pole...

Passive Crossover bypass – Quest / reQuest

I would like to revive this thread to enquire about the digital crossover aspect of bi-amping. While there is some detail to pay attention to when bypassing the passive crossovers, particularly in the Quest z, what have people done with regards to PC-based digital crossover (bass management?)...

Those look great, good job! As a Questz owner, I would be interested to hear the details of long-term problems and solutions.

Hi from San Jose, blew up my Quest Z woofers

Well, I was going to post the results of the woofer replacement in the thread linked in post #1, but it has disappeared! Mods, what happened to my thread? I'm unsure about spending the time to post pictures, experiences and otherwise participate if threads disappear or are deleted.

Hi from San Jose, blew up my Quest Z woofers

The replacement woofer recommended by Martin-Logan support is the Dayton Audio DCS305-4 12" Classic Subwoofer 4 Ohm, Parts Express #295-204. I won't receive these until Friday, but looking at the pictures it sure looks like Dayton Audio was the OEM for the drivers for Quest Z 24 years ago. Now...

Capacitor upgrade for Quest Z, Recommendations?

I'm afraid I don't have any capacitor replacement experience, but I can point you to the crossover schematic.

Hi from San Jose, blew up my Quest Z woofers

Hi all, love the electrostatic sound. I'm here to discuss how sweet these can sound. And fix my blown woofers, long story regarding an oscillating amp. Here is the replacement woofer thread if you have any suggestions.
