Anatomy of a high efficiency high output electrostatic loadspeaker.

I carefully looked at the cells again and the diasphragm material is attached on all 4 sides. Sorry about the previous mis-information.

He looks like a competant guy. The typical problem with physically big and heavy speakers is the transportation cost. Nowadays it seems particulary high, even shipping a big amp can cost over a $100, I can't imagine the freight for 200# of speakers. There are between 8 and 10 cells in each and...

New to Martin Logan, but not to Electrostatic speakers

After having them, I do find them a bit bright. I may have to change rooms as there are many reflective surfaces. Before I had a special room designed for just listening, and I placed a loop carpet behind the electrostatic speaker. It worked great and the room was very quiet. I see here how...

New to Martin Logan, but not to Electrostatic speakers

The speakers are very revealing. A great test of a sound that everyone is familiar with is hand-clapping. Most people don't really pay attention to the sound in real life, but it is an outstanding test for how a speakers transient response is. That and hard strumming of a guitar. I have one...

New to Martin Logan, but not to Electrostatic speakers

Well after it arrived, the capacitance matches the panel that I thought was good. Got it all installed and been listening to various music. I am not quite there with my tweaking. I think the speaker sound a bit bright. I am using a solid state bipolar amp. An Acurus 100x3 amp I took out of my...

Anatomy of a high efficiency high output electrostatic loadspeaker.

Yeah, he was an amazing sound engineer and also produced many albums of his own as the Allan parson project. I have most ofd those LPs. They always sounded good on my equipent. @Jazzman53 Thanks for the info.

I don't think it would be too hard to make a DW cell even without the special stator casting. You need to make a jig where you can bend the edges of the stators outward to control the electric field. Then attach some supports to them and create the bridge to tie them to the outer frame. As I...

Anatomy of a high efficiency high output electrostatic loadspeaker.

I found out what the vocal issues were. Unrelated to the speakers. I was playing a record and seems the cartridge was not sounding right when i compared the CD to the record. I checked the tracking force and the anti skating, Those were right on. The only thing left was the VTA. So the easy way...

Anatomy of a high efficiency high output electrostatic loadspeaker.

It was a carbon particle suspension in a oil based solvent. A solution you could silk screen on the Mylar. If you look at the picture of the diaphragm, you see a bunch of parallel lines. This is to prevent the charge from migrating sideways where the film is not attached to the frame. Spraying...

Anatomy of a high efficiency high output electrostatic loadspeaker.

Here is the front of the XG-10 Mk2. The tweeter mounted on the big cross-brace in the middle, with the element in front of the Mylar membrane. The tweeter housing was supposed to be sealed, but I suspect that the gas did leak out through it. The reddish color on the frame is the remnants of the...

How do you listen to your speakers

I don't have a high end HT speaker system, so won't be able to enjoy these recordings as much. My Sony DVD plays SACD, and I have bought a few of those.

How do you listen to your speakers

Gale had a catalog of 45 rpm LPs. I have one or two of them. I grew up listening to piano being played from when i was a toddler. One of those Gale recordings, played through a tube preamp, was the closest ever to me hearing a real piano. I have to dig it up sometime and take a pic of the cover.

How do you listen to your speakers

Interesting views on different recordings. Back 20 years ago when I had my old system working, I never really liked those classical recordings from a realism viewpoint. First the dynamics were compressed when compared to listening in a concert hall, which was my reference. Secondly I disliked...

How do you listen to your speakers

Last but not least, this recording has been well acclaimed. Sheffield records of Harry James. I have the LP and the CD. Not sure how rare the CD is, but I purchased mine when it probably was a decade out of stock, from a small radio station on Quebec Canada. There was a small add, and I...

How do you listen to your speakers

Another test record showing how revealing your system is. Tom's Diner is the cut. Basically a song without any accompaniment. When I heard it I was surprised how you can hear the ambience of the recording studio or synthetic echo, I don't really know. But this causes problems audible to the...

How do you listen to your speakers

Hotel California, when it came out set the standard for low distortion guitar recording. At the time the transient response and clarirty was outstanding. I'd say even today it be hard to better the impact of the guitar strings.

How do you listen to your speakers

I have listened to many female singers I am sure. What strikes my cord is the song Self Control by Laura Branigan (RIP). There is somethign special about the miking and recording chain, even is this is just for the popular market, but the emotions portrayed in her voice is amazing. She has other...

How do you listen to your speakers

I have a couple of disks I use for speaker evaluation and in gerneral how revealing they are. This may not be everyones esotoric music taste, but the cut Bergland will surprise you. Paly the beginning so the toy solder orr whatever seems to be the correct loudness.

How do you listen to your speakers

@amey01 When I started my musical journey into high fidelity I was a teenager with a home build speaker system with expensive drivers and a home build power amplifier from a Popular Electronics magazine. All my friends were impressed on how close to real female vocals were. I remember one...

Anatomy of a high efficiency high output electrostatic loadspeaker.

A 1000:1 probe are typically 1000 Mohm. I saw somewhwere that the bias supply has a 33Mohm resistor in series? Not sure about that, but based on this resistance, you could just calculate a voltage divider. In my case I wanted to measure the output of a 100:1 stepup transformer, and if you input...
