CLS-II ... some crazy mod ideas

And another thread that explains the Physics around ESL speakers... kinda technical but worth reading if you want to fully understand operation... DIYAudio link

CLS-II ... some crazy mod ideas

Hello Brandon, Here is a thread that shows the restoration of a CLS type panel. Tricky but doable... DIYAudio link Also of note - the mylar on the CLS stator is tensioned vertically - not horizontally. And exactly what the tension is is still a mystery to me...there is a % vertical...

Hello Brandon...I will have to dig up the DIYAudio thread...this was about 10 years ago...let me post back.....

CLS-II ... some crazy mod ideas

Hello Greggo - I am on DIYAudio along with a few others...there are a few members there that really know what they are doing when it come to electrostatic speakers...taught me tons... a member there - bolserst - was extremely knowledgeable and helpful... I also have played quite a bit with the...

From Theos to Montis, goodbye Magnepans.

Understood...I guess I would have just returned them too had I just purchased them.... I have a pair of Magnepan Tympani T-1D that are over 40 years old that I just reglued the voicecoils...should last another 40 years....as long as the mylar is intact - not ripped....thinking about adding a...

From Theos to Montis, goodbye Magnepans.

Regluing the Magnepan bass voicecoils is easy. I have done it many times with the new 3M N30 glue that is supposed to be much better than the older Milloxane glue from 3M. Now the quasi ribbon tweeter coils are not a delaminating problem that I can remember.... But Maggies panels are repairable...

WHAT IS THIS PLEASE?!? I can't find any information about this for the life of me

Whenever I need a simple power supply / wall wart, I just head to nearest Goodwill store. There are many abandoned power supplies in the electrical dept for a couple bux. There are tons of laptop power supplies there that are are around 18 - 20vdc and 3 amps...You just have to make sure the...

    CLS help in Indianapolis

I hear a big difference in how an ESL sounds soon after bias voltage applied and same a day later. Panel needs time to charge up...These are Constant Charge (High Resistance coating), not Constant Voltage (Low Resistance coating) ESL designs, so takes a while for all those electrons to find...

    Sold Martin Logan CLS II

Leporello, I think you are confusing the original Quad ESL-57 with the newer, much more robust ESL-63/988/2805 series (four panels). But the ESL-57 is still the Benchmark for Mids replication, but they had so many other issues that made Peter Walker design the ESL-63... But my Quads do sound...

What they say is true - need 100 watts to sound their best and 101 watts to blow them up.

Ha! They were nice! Just like my Quads (ESL-2805) a tiny bit better... Caveat is I have to be gentle with them....or else I am in a heap of trouble...

Found the CLS Bias / Sense circuit...yup, that whole Op Amp and Triac based circuit is the signal sense... Don't really know why ML bothered, as the total draw from wall is tiny... wattage - wise...

    CLS help in Indianapolis

I think Tosh meant to jumper the Secondary of the Bias transformer to the other non working speaker bias transformer...I agree, not very safe, and would require removing the questionable bias transformer all together to try.... But I am still trying to understand if both speakers have same...

    CLS help in Indianapolis

This is true, but only on the downstream (ESL) side of the high mega-ohm current limiting bias resistors, correct? The amplifier to stator (step up transformer secondary) voltages are definitely lethal, be very careful if you are poking around the interface while amp is driving the interface

    CLS help in Indianapolis

Leporello, Yes, you would still need to "load" the secondary of the tube amp transformer, but here you just put a woofer, while HF on to the panels driven by plates...I would imagine quite a bit of EQ'ing would be neccesary...but for a simple test? I talked to Roger a few times - he s a nice...

    CLS help in Indianapolis

I mean a switched outlet - like a wall switch that switches a wall outlet. If you are plugged into a Surge Protector and all else connected to this surge protector is working (getting power) than you should have power going to interface... but just check...I hate that these ML interfaces do not...

    CLS help in Indianapolis

Are the speakers plugged into a switched mains plug? Are you sure there is power to the interface? I know this is kinda silly, but I would start there... Whatever you do, never drive ESL speakers without the panels fully biased up, as you will fry your step up transformer. A friend plugged his...

    CLS help in Indianapolis

Leporello, Roger Sanders has an old writeup on driving ESL stators right off the plates of a tube amp (eliminating the step up transformer) to satisfying sound levels... the output tube plates were "only" around 500v, but worked... I have some old Acoustat and Quad panels laying around and my...
