If budget is sub-$2K for a steamer the Aurender and Lumin are in a different category. I have used a few different combinations options including Roon. All these options work, it all depends on what level and interface you are looking for and like.

The Lumin U1 Mini fits that exact description. Also, a used Aurender N100H would fall in your budget. I have heard the app controller is fantastic as well.

Have you looked at Lumin? They have both streamers and DAC streamers in different price ranges. Not only do they sound great, they have amazing support.

Great links and explanation! If you like the sound of tubes but want the power of solid state you should check out some of the Vitus amps, if you haven't already. The RI-101 is the first integrated I have heard that comes close to have the naturalness of tube but with the control of solid state.

How close are you sitting to the speakers? From my experience when you sit too close to the speakers you loose some of the higher frequencies since they come from the top portion of the panel. Tilt the speaker too far forward and you lose a bit of the mids/mid-bass.
