Sounds like the panels are dead due to age and storage condition. The sound level is too low that's why your amp is going to protect mode. Washing will not fix it, they need to be replaced. New panels from ML will cost well over $1000/pair, which is why old MLs with worn panels are basically...
The amp in my Descent subwoofer died a while back and ML did not have it. I posted it on https://diyaudio.com/ and someone told me the exact amp model it uses and where to buy it. I managed to buy a replacement and replaced it myself. Maybe you can try that.
Summits are a pain because the metal frame holding the panel covers the woofer as well, and there's also a metal piece on top of the woofer box that needs to be removed. Plus the frame goes around the panel on all 4 sides. You're basically disassembling the whole speaker!
I've replaced panels on all my MLs before - Prodigy, Aeon i, Stage X, Summit. All straightforward. The newer, larger speakers like Summit are more troublesome. ESL should be quite easy. Anyway the instructions are really detailed.
Email [email protected] and tell them you need the service manual for your model. They will send you the PDF with very detailed instructions on how to replace the panels amongst other service procedures.
If the panels have degraded it's very obvious. High frequencies will be very muffled, and the woofer will be overpowering. ML speakers are known for their sparkling high end, if you don't get that, they likely need new panels.
Cinema 40 supports 4 independent subs. That is probably the most "correct" way to go for home theater use. I believe the subs will receive the same audio input signal, but with independent room correction applied to each.
Ah yes, you're definitely right, I remember it now.
I'm just quite surprised that the Hifi Zenit rebuilt panels doesn't sound perfect. Is there an ML dealer near you where you can have a listen to compare?
Forgot to mention, that sounds about the results I got with Russ Knotts restoring my panels as well. They work but don't sound the same as new, and also some woofer imbalance.
I was considering having Hifi Zenit rebuild my Summit panels but your review has me worried. New panels from ML should sound perfectly blended with the woofers, with a sparkling and crisp high end.
Please report back, would love to hear how it goes. Their prices are great for larger panels (which ML charges a lot for), not so great for smaller panels since I assume their cost is mostly labor which isn't all that different for different panel sizes. The price they quoted me for the Aeon i...
This is exactly what worn out panels sound like. Washing isn't going to help although you can give it a try. They need to be replaced.
Since you are in Germany you try contacting https://www.hifi-zenit.de/ who rebuilds the panels for less than new ones cost from MartinLogan. If you do please...
You will very likely end up with comb filtering where the waves from the two speakers interfere with each other and you have dead spots and loud spots as you move along the axis.
