I agree with Adam. We need stricter regulations on the purchase of guns and ammunition. We need laws on the proper storage of firearms. And I say all this as an avid target shooter with over a dozen guns of my own. But we need more than just stricter regulation. We need a culture change...

    KLH Model Nine’s Incoming

Exactly, Jonathan! Because you don’t have to worry about any rear wave, you can place them wherever the bass sounds best in relation to the front wall. And with their size and design, they blend in nicely into any room. One other point, their small size does not translate to a short soundstage...

    KLH Model Nine’s Incoming

Time to update this thread. I finally found the time to haul my Model Nine’s up to Columbus, Ohio and deliver them to David Janszen for a full restoration. He’s going to strip them down to the bones, replace and upgrade all the electronics, rebuild all the electrostatic bass panels, and replace...

    Motion Slim X3 Soundbar

Jonfo, thanks for the ideas. I wasn’t familiar with the elac. But I have been checking out the Golden Ear and I like it a lot. I’m strongly considering buying the smaller version to test out with my current den tv, and if I like it enough I may buy the larger version once the house is built...

    Motion Slim X3 Soundbar

That’s a great find, Robert. And I’m tempted. But it isn’t exactly what I was looking for. The problem with these all-in-one units is that the technology (processing, inputs, etc.) changes so quickly and they generally can’t be updated. This one, for instance, is 6 years old and it lacks HDMI...

    Motion Slim X3 Soundbar

I’m curious if anyone has owned or listened to this sound bar or other similar ones. Background: In my home I’m about to build, I’ll have a dedicated theater with a 9.4.6 JBL system. So for the remaining tv’s in the den and the kids playroom upstairs, I don’t want a complicated surround sound...

    ? on summit bass

First reflections off the floor, walls or ceiling are never desirable. Secondary reflections aren’t as much an issue. The reflections from the atmos speakers could definitely be blurring the sound, resulting in a decrease in the immersive effect of an atmos soundtrack.

There is no one optimum. It depends on the rest of the room, the speakers, etc. Ideally, you want a good mix of absorption, diffusion, and natural reflection in a room. And you need different strategies to deal with higher frequencies vs. bass frequencies. First reflections off of speakers need...

    ? on summit bass

Well, obviously there’s a lot more to it than just which direction the drivers fire but it’s one piece of the puzzle. My Descent sounds pretty good to me (when set up well and properly integrated), and it has drivers firing in three different horizontal directions. I do like ML’s idea of...

Well, according to REL, a downward firing and a front firing woofer in combination is the best possible setup for a subwoofer. You can read about it here to understand their reasoning: Down Firing vs. Front Firing Subwoofer - Blog - REL

Audiophile BS response: carpet gives you wooly bass. If you want cold hard slam, you need granite under there. If you want to retain the pure tones in the mid-bass, you need walnut (for darker sound) or maple (for cleaner, more open sound). /s 😉😂 Real talk: the material under the Summit’s...

I had the pleasure of speaking to David Janszen today. Very nice guy. And when I called his company, he’s the one who answered the phone. Gotta love that! Anyway, he’s going to send me some info on the upgrades and said they’ll let me know when they’re ready for me to bring the speakers up for...

    KLH Model Nine’s Incoming

Hey Jon. I have seen that. But thanks for posting the link so others can read it too as it’s a great read. I’m really excited to get these speakers up to David for a rebuild. Also, I agree with you about the imaging. I hadn’t considered the idea that this speaker acts as a point source for the...

    KLH Model Nine’s Incoming

Yes, those are his speakers. David Janszen. He’s the son of Arthur Janszen. I’m hoping to get to listen to those speakers when I take my Nines to him for refurbishment. The electrostatic tweeter in those speakers is the one he’ll replace mine with. The silk dome tweeter on the side of his...

    KLH Model Nine’s Incoming

Thanks, Robert. They do have a lot of surface area. But interestingly, unlike a hybrid ML that has one big panel for everything from about 270 hz. on up, these have multiple subpanels handling bass and treble separately. Each speaker has one tweeter panel (at ear level on the outside edge of the...

    KLH Model Nine’s Incoming

Got the Model Nine’s in my listening room and hooked up to the CJ Premier 140 tube amp. They work! And not only that, they sound great! They have fantastic imaging and put off a huge soundstage. These big panels have a very different, heavier sonic presence in the room than the Summits. It’s...

Well, I haven’t had a chance to hook them up yet, but I did solve the power cord issue. Not dangerous at all. 🤪⚡️

    KLH Model Nine’s Incoming

Thanks, Jon. Wish I had a variac, but I don’t. Not too worried, since I’m going to be refurbishing them anyway. And yes, I’m excited to audition David Janszen’s speakers when I take these up to him. I’ll definitely post my impressions. Seems to be a very versatile and competent hybrid speaker.

Oh, he definitely makes his own speakers. They’re hybrid electrostats, but not the standard panel speaker like an ML. Check them out: JansZen Audio
